Hunted Projects is pleased to present Don’t Settle For Walkin’, an exhibition of new works on paper by Brooklyn-based artist Chuck Webster, on view from 9 January to 1 February 2026. This exhibition celebrates Webster’s first solo exhibition in Scotland.
Don’t Settle For Walkin’ brings together a series of unique unframed works on paper produced between 2022 and 2025, a period of sustained, wave-like intensity in Webster’s practice. Working exclusively on paper, these mixed media works invite direct engagement, allowing viewers to experience surface, touch, and scale up close, emphasising intimacy and immediacy. Although modest in size, the works possess remarkable density and presence, extending Webster’s longstanding exploration of how images can exceed their material limits. As Roberta Smith observed of his paintings, they hold “a strange, irrepressible scale”, a quality that reappears here with clarity. Forms emerge through accumulation rather than resolution: fragments of plants, figures, architectural shapes, and symbols hover within shifting fields of marks, resisting fixed interpretation and encouraging immersive looking.
Drawing is central to Webster’s practice, a way of moving through ideas until something unfamiliar asserts itself. Created through sustained sequences, the works allow meaning to arise slowly through repetition, variation, and attention. Influenced by Philip Guston’s “peculiar miracle” of art making, Webster prioritises experience over explanation, producing drawings that are provisional yet inevitable. Language returns to Webster’s work after a long absence, appearing as lists, lyrics, and fragments drawn from music, poetry, film, and popular culture. Words function as material rather than message, valued for sound, rhythm, humour, and emotional charge. In other works, language disappears entirely, allowing silence and non-verbal intensity to dominate. Text emerges only when the drawing demands it.
Materiality is central. Webster works extensively with rare and vintage handmade papers, some dating to the nineteenth century, chosen for resistance, durability, and tactile vitality. These papers are active collaborators, carrying histories of labour and use that resonate with the artist’s belief in releasing the energy embedded within materials. Presented unframed, the drawings remain direct and vivid, reinforcing their status as objects as much as images. Rooted in art history, craft, and everyday visual culture, Webster’s work is equally shaped by New York City, whose intensity, humour, and resilience permeate the drawings. Discipline and play operate in tandem, combining observational focus with improvisation and curiosity.
In Don’t Settle For Walkin’, Webster presents drawing as a vital, living practice. The unframed works on paper offer space for close looking, where scale collapses and expands, references dissolve into touch and gesture, and seeing becomes an encounter. Presented at Hunted Projects, the exhibition affirms drawing as the foundation of Webster’s practice and as a site of sustained attention, freedom, and discovery. This is a rare opportunity to experience the artist’s intimate, intricate, and captivating works up close - each line, mark, and gesture alive with energy, imagination, and surprise.
